Start with the story

Kamakshi’s shrine belongs at the centre of a Kanchi pilgrimage. Begin with darshan of the seated Mother, then connect her presence here with her penance at Ekambaranathar. The two temples share a sacred story while keeping their own worship.

Sthala puranam

Kamakshi performs penance beneath the mango tree beside the Kampa, worshipping a Shivalinga fashioned from river sand. Shiva responds to her devotion and their divine union is renewed. At her own temple she grants darshan seated in Padmasana, holding the sugarcane bow, pasha and ankusha. The Devasthanam also recounts her manifestation as Bala to overcome Bhandakasura and the grace received by Mooka Kavi, whose praise becomes the Mooka Panchasati.

The people and craft behind the temple

The temple’s restoration account records inscriptions of Chola rulers and later work on its halls and shrines. Worship of the Sri Chakra is associated with Adi Shankara. Kamakshi’s sanctum is in the Gayatri Mandapam; Kalvar Perumal, a Divya Desam, is within this temple complex. These are distinct sacred presences, not separate journeys across the city.

Allow for the Kamakshi darshan queue. A visit to Kalvar Perumal depends on the inner shrine’s access; ask temple staff rather than assuming the main queue includes it.

Discoveries to take with you

Gayatri Mandapam

During darshan, notice the seated form and the sugarcane bow where visible. Let the image anchor the story of Kamakshi’s grace.

Sanctum worship and the prakara shrine

Connect the Sri Chakra worship with Adi Shankara’s shrine in the prakara. Do not expect a close view of ritual objects from the public queue.
