Madurai
Temple Circuit · reading guide · 8 September 2026Add Koodal Azhagar to the city pilgrimage alongside Meenakshi. The visit offers a different focus: Vishnu’s forms across the vimana and the affection of a devotee who blesses the Lord.
At the Pandya king Vallabhadeva’s assembly, Periyalvar establishes Narayana as the supreme refuge. His devotion flowers into Tiruppallandu, wishing enduring auspiciousness upon the Lord. Koodal celebrates this song’s birth in Madurai. Remember its striking tenderness: the devotee’s love becomes a blessing offered to the very Lord who protects him.
The Ashtanga vimana contains Vishnu in seated, standing and reclining forms across three levels. The temple’s account records Nayak-period work on the flagstaff hall, tank hall and vimana. Koodal is also an old name of Madurai, connected here with its assemblies of Tamil poets.
Opening hours not yet confirmed. The suggested visit needs an opening-time check.
Start with regular ground-level darshan. Ask whether the upper levels are open and suitable for your mobility before adding them; their existence is not a promise of daily access.
