Start with the story

Between Ekambaranathar and Kamakshi stands Kumarakottam. Devotees recognise the Somaskanda relationship—Shiva, Uma and their son—in this grouping. Here the story of Murugan is also a story of Tamil composition, through Kachiappa Sivachariyar’s Kanda Puranam.

Sthala puranam

Murugan questions Brahma about the Pranava. When Brahma cannot explain its meaning, Murugan confines him and takes up creation as Brahmasasta. Kumarakottam honours this form. Kachiappa Sivachariyar composes the Kanda Puranam here, leaving each day’s writing in the sanctum; Murugan corrects the manuscript through the night. Remember the text as an offering returned with the Lord’s grace.

The people and craft behind the temple

Kumarakottam lies on West Raja Street within the central Kanchi temple cluster. Arunagirinathar’s Tiruppugazh also honours this shrine. Its link with Kanda Puranam makes literary devotion central to a visit; the temple is more than a convenient stop between two larger complexes.

Pair Kumarakottam with nearby Kamakshi when the opening periods overlap. The district lists a later evening reopening here than at Kamakshi, so physical proximity does not mean identical hours.

Discoveries to take with you

Brahmasasta sanctuary

Connect the form worshipped here with the Pranava episode and Murugan taking up creation. Avoid assuming every Murugan temple presents the same episode.

After darshan, within a permitted resting place

Retell Kachiappa’s practice of leaving his writing with Murugan each night. This guide does not claim a surviving original manuscript is on display.
