Kanchipuram
Temple Circuit · reading guide · 8 September 2026This is Parameswara Vinnagaram in Kanchipuram city, not the similarly named temple at Uthiramerur. Worship and royal history meet here: the three-storeyed sanctuary honours Vishnu in three postures, while narrative reliefs preserve the Pallava dynasty’s story.
Tirumangai Alvar sings of this Divya Desam as Parameswara Vinnagaram. Vishnu’s seated, reclining and standing forms occupy successive levels of the sanctuary. The arrangement gives three modes of the Lord’s presence a single sacred home. The upper shrines are not an everyday visitor route; begin with the worship available at ground level.
Nandivarman II Pallavamalla built this eighth-century temple. Around the enclosure, sculpted scenes and inscriptions narrate Pallava dynastic history. Compare the narrative panels with the lion-supported pillars: one records royal events, the other establishes the rhythm of the sacred passage.

Do not confuse this temple with Vaikunta Perumal at Uthiramerur. Upper-storey access is restricted; the three levels are an architectural description, not a promise of three darshans on an ordinary day.
