Approach to the main sanctuary
Notice the change in level toward Perumal’s shrine. Keep enough time for darshan and Perundevi Thayar rather than treating the large complex as a short photo stop.

Temple Circuit · reading guide · 8 September 2026Give Varadaraja a substantial visit in Vishnu Kanchi, southeast of the central temple cluster. The pilgrimage centres on Perumal and Perundevi Thayar. The carved halls repay time after darshan; Athi Varadar’s rare emergence is not an everyday attraction.
Brahma performs a yajna at Kanchi and Vishnu manifests from the sacrificial fire as Varadaraja, the Lord who grants boons. At Brahma’s request he remains to bless devotees. The sanctuary stands on Hastigiri, also called Attigiri. Perundevi Thayar has her own important place in this worship. The wooden Athi Varadar is brought from the temple tank for a special darshan cycle once in forty years; ordinary visits are for the temple’s regular deities.
The complex grew through Chola and Vijayanagara patronage. Its hundred-pillared hall brings together horsemen, yalis and deeply worked stone; a chain carved from stone is a distinctive detail. See the hall as a space of temple service as well as craftsmanship, and allow a separate pause to study its pillars.

The main sanctuary involves steps. Confirm a suitable approach if steps are difficult. Do not plan a routine visit around seeing Athi Varadar; special displays require an official announcement.
