Sundararaja comes from these hills for Meenakshi’s wedding, reaching the Vaigai after the marriage has taken place. His journey lives on in the Chithirai festival. Another account remembers sage Sutapa, transformed into a frog by Durvasa’s curse. Praying as Manduka Maharishi, he receives Kallazhagar’s grace and release. Both accounts centre on the Lord coming out to meet those who await him.
The HR&CE account traces Thirumaliruncholai through Paripadal and the Alvars’ hymns. It distinguishes the inner Iraniyan fort from the outer Alagapuri fort. The hill and these enclosing walls explain the site’s character better than a single foundation date.

This is a separate hill excursion northeast of Madurai. Budget the return journey and the onward hill road separately. Festival processions require their own arrangements; an ordinary-day plan cannot predict their access.
