Temple approach with a view of Arunachala
Remember the immeasurable fire as you orient yourself to the hill before darshan.

Temple Circuit · reading guide · 8 September 2026Shiva manifests as an immeasurable column of fire. Orient yourself to the hill before entering.
When Brahma and Vishnu dispute who is supreme, Shiva appears as a column of fire without beginning or end. Vishnu becomes a boar to seek its base; Brahma becomes a swan to seek its summit. Neither can reach the limit. Shiva then manifests as Arunachala, the holy fire hill. The temple, the hill and Karthigai Deepam belong to this single sacred account. Remembering it changes the visit: the hill is itself the Lord’s presence, and Girivalam is worship through walking around that presence.
Orient yourself to the hill before entering. Within the great temple, notice the gateways and the relationship of the processional spaces to the sanctuary. Reserve architectural exploration for after darshan, following the route open that day.
