Shiva manifests as an immeasurable column of fire. Vishnu takes the form of a boar to seek its base; Brahma flies upward as a swan to find its summit. Arunachala is the hill manifestation of that divine fire, and the Karthigai Deepam festival brings the hill and temple into one act of worship.
Orient yourself to the hill before entering. Within the great temple, notice the gateways and the relationship of the processional spaces to the sanctuary. Reserve architectural exploration for after darshan, following the route open that day.
