Start with the story

Name the BHU campus when arranging transport. This is a separate Vishwanath temple from the Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga near the ghats. Give the visit time for Shiva darshan and for the scriptural inscriptions that connect the university setting with spiritual study.

Sthala puranam

Shiva is worshipped here as Vishwanath, Lord of the Universe. The devotional purpose joins prayer with learning: passages of the Bhagavad Gita and other sacred writings are inscribed on the walls. After darshan, one passage can become a point for reflection on duty, devotion or self-knowledge. The temple carries Vishwanath worship into campus life without replacing the city’s Jyotirlinga pilgrimage.

The people and craft behind the temple

Madan Mohan Malaviya envisioned the temple and the Birla family supported its construction. Completed in 1966, the complex brings marble surfaces, a high shikhara and subsidiary shrines into the university campus. It welcomes visitors irrespective of caste or creed.

Discoveries to take with you

Scriptural inscriptions

Read a short Gita passage and reflect on its meaning. The inscriptions make study part of the visit, not merely decoration.

Outer approach

Observe how the high shikhara rises from the campus setting. Connect Malaviya’s educational vision with the temple’s continued place of worship.
