Start with the story

Dwarka is Krishna’s western city. Notice the carved walls, the flag above the shikhara, and the named Swarg and Moksh gateways.

Sthala puranam

Dwarka is Krishna’s western city. The temple’s founding account names Vajranabh; worship of Krishna as Lord of Dwarka continues at the centre of the town.

The people and craft behind the temple

Also called Jagat Mandir, the temple stands above the Gomti approach. Gujarat Tourism describes a structure shaped by repeated rebuilding, with strong sixteenth- and nineteenth-century layers. Its carved walls enclose Krishna’s sanctuary; the shikhara and flag rise above them. Swarg and Moksh are the named gateways, while the steps lead the visitor towards the meeting of river and sea. Read those changes in level as part of the site: the shrine above, the river below, and the sea beyond. The main approach has more than fifty steps, so ask about a suitable entrance before visiting with someone who needs easier access.

Discoveries to take with you

Swarg and Moksh gateways; river approach

Notice how the named gateways and river steps connect Krishna’s temple to the Gomti and sea. Confirm a suitable approach if steps are difficult.

Exterior view of the shikhara

Look up to the flag and then at the carved walls. Allow time for darshan before walking towards the river.
