Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are at the centre of Puri’s worship. In the annual Ratha Yatra, their journey to Gundicha carries the Lord’s presence from the sanctuary onto Bada Danda, the great road. Food offered to the Lord, Mahaprasad, is another essential part of this devotional life. Odisha Tourism describes its traditional preparation in earthen pots. Darshan, the chariot road and the sacred offering give three connected ways to understand Puri; Mahaprasad belongs to worship, not simply to a list of dishes to try.
At the eastern Singhadwara, orient yourself to the entrance and the great road. The two enclosing walls organise the approach to the inner temple. Puri district associates the twelfth-century temple with Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva.
