Start with the story

Rama’s story unfolds in two materials here: carved pillars and painted walls. Begin with one episode you know, then discover a less familiar detail—Hanuman offering music with a veena.

Sthala puranam

A local temple legend says the images were found in a tank near Darasuram. The building’s history belongs to Nayaka patronage.

The people and craft behind the temple

The temple is associated with Achuthappa and Raghunatha Nayak and the minister Govinda Dikshitar. Its visual storytelling makes patronage tangible: resources and skilled work turned an epic into a place people could walk through.

Discoveries to take with you

Hall near the gopuram

Look for a coronation scene among the Ramayana pillars: Sugriva and Vibhishana’s coronations are represented here. A crown, a seated figure and the surrounding attendants help you read the scene; use a label or guide to identify which episode.

Prakaram, if currently accessible

The Ramayana paintings run in three bands around the prakaram. Follow one band in sequence rather than jumping between levels. Choose two neighbouring scenes and work out what changes between them.

Ask about the sculptural depictions

Find the depiction of Hanuman playing the veena. Notice the instrument and the position of his hands: here devotion is expressed through music. This detail gives you a specific scene to remember from the temple’s Ramayana art.
