Parakrama Pandyan receives Shiva’s direction in a dream to establish a southern Kashi beside the Chittaru. The king’s devotion gives Tenkasi its sacred link with Varanasi, and Kasi Viswanathar becomes the heart of the town. Read the name as part of the journey: this is Then Kashi, the Kashi of the south. Stand before the great gateway with that connection in mind, then let the visit lead inward towards Viswanathar rather than ending at the tower photograph.
The temple belongs to the fifteenth-century Pandya setting. Look at the sculpted hall and then the nine-storey rajagopuram: the present tower was rebuilt in 1990 after a fire. Reading these separately helps distinguish the older temple from the renewed gateway.
