Somnath sanctuary
Recall Chandra’s worship at Prabhas and the relief granted by Shiva.
Somnath · Prabhas Patan
Temple Circuit · reading guide · 8 September 2026Chandra’s preference for Rohini brings Daksha’s curse. Follow the relationship of the sanctum, assembly hall and dance hall, then take in the shore setting from permitted areas.
Chandra marries Daksha’s twenty-seven daughters but favours Rohini, neglecting the others. Daksha’s curse takes away his radiance. Brahma directs Chandra to Prabhas, where he worships Shiva with devotion. Shiva grants relief, and the Lord is revered as Somnath, Lord of Soma. The trust also preserves the account of successive sacred temples associated with Chandra, Ravana and Krishna. At Prabhas, the Jyotirlinga and Chandra’s prayer are the centre of the pilgrimage; the sea setting belongs around that encounter.
The trust records Sardar Patel’s resolve to rebuild after his visit in November 1947 and the consecration by President Rajendra Prasad on 11 May 1951. Nearby, the Ahilyabai temple carries an older chapter of continuing worship. Visit it as a separate shrine rather than treating it as a fragment of the modern building. The sanctum, assembly and dance halls of the present temple, the neighbouring shrine and the shore give a clear sequence for understanding this place.
Opening hours not yet confirmed. The suggested visit needs an opening-time check.
