Tulsidas’s devotion to Rama is the heart of this shrine. The Durgakund site is associated with his composition and recitation of the Ramcharitmanas. Rama’s life, Sita’s steadfastness, Lakshmana’s service and Hanuman’s bhakti are carried into the temple through verses and images. A familiar episode read here can connect a family’s remembered Ramayana with the words of the Manas.
The present marble temple was built by the Sureka family in 1964. Its walls carry chaupais, dohas and other verses from the Ramcharitmanas. The modern building honours the poet’s much earlier devotional work; the building and the composition belong to different periods.
